Safety has always been a frequent question amongst the expats that are in Santiago or are looking to potentially make the move to the capital of Chile. With Television and social media always being so negative it’s hard to know what is real and what is not. Has crime really increased during the recent years here in Chile?
Short answer: No!
No, it just seemed like it did.Taken from recent studies from the National Statistics Institute of Chile (2017) and The National Survey of Urban and Citizen Safety (2018), the crime rate has pretty much stalled and remained the same in these last 7 years, but perception has definitely increased due to the proliferation of smartphones and social media. More citizens now have access to these due to the economic prosperity of the country so now more than ever the few crimes that do happen from time to time tend to be recorded and posted everywhere on Twitter / Instagram which then get the attention of mainstream media and continue to spread chaos and sensationalism.
Chile is still one of the safest countries in Latinoamerica and this reinforced by the tens of thousands of expats that decide to make this place their home for a long term or stay indefinitely. Santiago is a noteworthy capital and it will stay that way for the time being.
